Will Smith is set to make his performing debut on the Univision awards show Lo Ours Award, which will broadcast live Feb. 20.
The Grammy winner will take the stage to perform his newly released single, “First Love,” a collaboration between Smith and Spanish singer-songwriter India Martínez. This will mark the rapper’s first performance in the history of the show and the TV debut of the new track.
Smith will be joined by Martínez, DJ Khaled and previously announced performer Thalia, accompanied by Miami Sound Machine, to open the 37th edition of the show.
The awards ceremony is set to air live Thursday starting at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Univision, UNIMÁS and ViX.
Smith recently made his return to music, releasing several tracks, including “Work of Art” with RUSS ft. Jaden; “Beautiful Scars” ft. Big Sean; and “You Can Make It” ft. Sunday Service Choir and Fridayy, which reached No. 1 on the Gospel Airplay chart. All of these tracks, including “First Love,” will appear on Smith’s first solo album in nearly 20 years, Based on a True Storywhich is set for release next month.
The Oscar-winning actor, who last summer had a box office hit with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, recently spoke about his return to music.
“Music is a more honest place for me where I feel like I can say things that I wouldn’t say, and I can express things, and there’s uncertainty and there’s sadness,” he said. “The two things I would never let myself publicly be is sad or mad. Now I’m just starting to be more honest with myself — I have a lot of fun in life, but I’m sad sometimes and I can get mad sometimes.”
As half of the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Smith made history by winning the first-ever Grammy for best rap performance in 1989 for “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
