Secretary for Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He stopped in Texas on Sunday and visited the family of a 6-year-old girl who died of a measles virus in February.
Kennedy confirmed his visit to Texas in a post on X in which he encouraged people to receive a vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) in the midst of growing cases of measles.
“Today I came to Gaines County in Texas to comfort the Hildebrand family after the loss of their 8-year-old daughter Daisy,” Kennedy wrote in the post. “I met the family of 6-year-old Kayley Fehr after passing away in February. I also developed relationships with a deep inclination towards other members of this community at that difficult time.”
Kennedy said his intention was quiet to visit the Gaines district, comfort his family and be with the community as they grieve.

But he also said he was there to support Texas health officials and to learn how HHS agencies may be better partners to control the outbreak of measles.
From Sunday, there were 642 measles cases in 22 countries, and 499 were in Texas.
In March, Kennedy arranged a team from centers for the control and prevention of illness (CDC) to help strengthen the local and state response to the epidemic, while delivering pharmacy and state clinics with MMR vaccines and other supplies.

Kennedy also had teamwork with local schools and health care institutions to support contact investigations and address the communities to answer questions concerning health care.
“The most effective way to prevent the widening of measles is the MMR vaccine,” Kennedy wrote in a post on social networks. “I talked to Governor Abbott and offered constant support to HHS. At his request, we redeemed the CDC teams to Texas. We will continue to monitor Texas leadership and offer similar resources to other hit jurisdictions.”
