One police officer killed, another injured in Newark, New Jersey shooting

One police officer was killed and the other was injured in a shooting on Friday night in Newark in New Jersey, according to reports.

The shooting happened just after 6:30 pm near the intersection of Carteret and Broadway Street.

Both officers were taken to a university hospital where one was declared dead, a branch Fox 5 reported.

One suspect was shot to scene And a gun was taken out, the report said.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Wrote in a post on X updated on the incident.

“This is a developing situation,” he wrote. “Please pray for these officers, their families and all our men and women in uniform who put their lives in order to guard us.”

His team confirmed that Murphy and his wife Tammy had visited privately University hospital in Newark.

Chief lawyer Matthew J. Plaktin said his office monitored the shooting carefully.

“Our law officials are damaged daily to protect our communities, and tonight is a painful reminder of the depth of sacrifice they give,” the statement published in X. “Please keep the whole Newark police department and the family of our officers in your thoughts while we pray for both officers who fired tonight.”

Within a few hours, there were four police officers across the country, according to the brotherly order of the national police vice -president Joe Gamaldi.

“In the last three hours, 4 police officers have been shot, one is dead,” Gamaldi wrote in a post about X. “2 Officers from Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) PD, it is expected that both will recover.

He added that the incidents were “out of the heart”.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital for comment.
