NHL news: Rangers fire Peter Laviolette after disappointing season


After a disappointing season, New York Rangers On Saturday, they announced that they had made a decision to separate with Chief Coach Peter Laviolette after only two seasons. The attendant was also an assistant chief coach Phil Housley, the team said.

Laviolette, 60, had a 94-59-11 record in his two seasons in New York. The Rangers had the best regular season with him in the 2023-2024 franchise history, when they had a team record of 114 points and 55 wins.

“Today I informed Peter Laviolette and Phil Housley to change our coaching change,” said Rangers CEO Chris Drury in a statement. “I want to thank them and wish them their families all the best they are going forward. Peter is for the first time, both professionally and personally, and I am really grateful for his passion and dedication to the Rangers in his time as the main coach.”

“After ending up a year ago with the best regular record of the season at the NHL, in the way of the Eastern Conference Finals, we went into this season with high expectations for ourselves. We just failed to meet these expectations. We all have to do better – including me.”

“While we are moving to next season and beyond, I felt that the change needed to give us the best opportunity to achieve our goals as organizations. Our search for the new main coach will start immediately.”

The Rangers were the sixth Tim Laviolette was the main coach throughout his career. He trained Nashville PredatorsCarolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capital and New York Islanders before joining the Rangers.

Stresser Mika Zibanejad scored 20 goals, and this season he had 62 points after he had 26 goals and 72 points last season. Chris Kreider had 39 goals and 76 points last season, and this season he had only 22 goals and 30 points.
