“I thought I was only unhappy. With this diagnosis of Eds, now I realize that my body cannot handle the physical nature of playing hockey,” Lucius said in a statement. “Given this condition, my history of injuries and the physical nature of hockey, medically advised me not to continue playing.”
Lucius said he had been dealing with joint injuries over the years and returned from them.
“I feel blessed that I have experienced everything he has given me a hockey over the years even though I have been demolished that I cannot continue to realize my dream of playing in the NHL,” he said.

Lucius was a member of the National United States Development Program before playing at the University of Minnesota for the 2021-22 season. He competed in the 2023 World Juniors, where he and the United States won a bronze medal.
