In a rare move for Our armyMedal for the honor of the recipient SGT. Dakota Meyer signed up again at the Marine Corps Reserve after 15 years outside the uniform. Meyer says the decision comes from a deep sense of unfinished duty and desire to encourage others to serve.
“It was never a better time to serve our country than now,” Meyer said on Friday on “American editorial staff. “
“There was never a need, as we currently needed, good men and women who are ready to rise and who are willing to defend the beliefs of the American people, the Constitution and protect all these things from any enemy who is willing to try and try to threaten it.”
Meyer received a medal for honor for his heroic actions during a deadly battle of 2009 in Afghanistan Province of Kunar. In the midst of an intense shooting, he has repeatedly entered the fight zone in Humvee to save his colleagues Marinaca and Afghanistani, saving dozens of lives. President Barack Obama was awarded the highest military honor in the country in 2011.
Thursday, Defense Minister Peta Hegsetth gave an oath to enrollment during the Pentagon Ceremony. Meyer, who is now 36 years old, re -enters the service with the same rank he held on active duty, sergeant, and will serve as a pedestrian man in the reserves.

“It wasn’t a day since I came out 15 years ago that I didn’t wake up and I really want to use it again,” Meyer said. “I didn’t want to do it because of the rank. I didn’t want to do it for recognition. I just did it because the mission never left me.”
Hegsetth noted that Meyer had not asked for a public ceremony, but that his return to service deserved to be recognized.
“I want the American people. I want your fellow Marinci. I want other members of the service to see the example and say … You are never too experienced, you have never worked too much that you cannot continue to contribute,” Hegsetth said.
“Not only is logged in and be on a recruiting poster, he signs in order to do the right thing, which is again another proof of who he is and what he represents.”
Meyer is among the rare Recipients of the Honor Medal In American history to return to military service.
He also hopes that his decision will echo with young Americans who think about a military career.

“Becoming Marin is far one of the greatest achievements in my life,” he said. “It is an honor to serve in addition to people. It is an honor to be able to serve a purpose. And it is an honor to be part of the organization.”
Meyer’s re -application comes because military employment has become increasingly concerned with the leaders of Pentagon in recent years. Hegsetth Secretary says US Army broke previous recruit recordssince December 2024 was the most productive December in more than a decade.
Defense officials notice that the increase in employment began even before the current administration assumed his duty. Former Army secretary Christine Wormuthwhich served until January, he told Fox News that the increase began earlier in 2024, before the election.

Meyer believes the rush is a sign that Americans seek meaning.
“People outside are looking for a place right now, they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” he said. “They [want to] be part of a greater good. And I think our army is the place where they are able to find it. “
