‘Magic mushrooms’ may offer major relief for Parkinson’s patients, study shows

As Parkinson cases Continue to rise, the race is for therapies in the fight against the effects of the disease – and the researchers specified a unlikely source of relief.

Psilocibin, a psilocybin, a psilocybine found in some mushrooms, improves mood, cognition and motor symptoms in Parkinson’s patients, according to a new study at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

A substance, which is often called “magic mushrooms”, previously proved to be relieve depression And anxiety, which is why researchers have explored that they explore its potential for Parkinsonov.

People with a disorder of neurological movement often suffer from “exhausting mood dysfunctions” and do not tend to respond well to traditional antidepressants, UCSF statements said.

“Many people do not understand this, but the symptoms of mood in Parkinson are associated with faster physical decline,” said the author of Chief Studio Ellen Bradley, MD

“And they are actually a stronger patient’s predictor ‘ Quality of life with Parkinson of their motor symptoms. “

A small study included 12 people with mild to moderate Parkinson disease. They moved at the age of 40 to 75. They all had depression and/or anxiety.

They all received a dose of psilocybin of 10 mg, then two weeks later 25 mg of dose. To measure the effects, participants met with licensed therapist before and after receiving medication.

In one -week and one -month monitoring, patients reported “clinically significant improvements” not only moods and cognition, but also motor function.

“Many people do not understand this, but the symptoms of mood in Parkinson are associated with faster physical fall.”

“These results are really encouraging,” Bradley told Fox News Digital. “Depression and anxiety, which weaken so many people with Parkinson’s, have improved significantly – and these improvements lasted at least three months after the patients took the medicine.”

Amir Inamdar, a pharmaceutical treatment doctor in the UK and the chief doctor in Cybin, noted that the improvement of motor symptoms was a bit surprising.

“As the authors note, this could be due to dopamine modulation through psilocybin influence on several types of serotonin receptors.” (Inamdar was not included in the studio.)

The most common side effects of psilocybin were anxiety, nausea, headache and high blood pressureBut none were serious enough to require medical care, according to researchers.

“Despite reports on challenging experiences in several participants, psilocibin seemed to be well tolerated,” Inamdar noted. “The side effects were in accordance with what was observed in other studies, no precipitation/ exacerbation Psychotic symptoms. ”

The study, which was published in neurophopharmacology, a nature publication, was funded by an anonymous donor.

Restrictions and further research

This is the first study that measured the effects of psychedelic substances on patients with neurodegenerative disease, according to USCF.

Although this study was “important first step”, Bradley noted that the researchers could not draw conclusions from it, because it was a small pilot without a control group.

“We have now started a much larger trial intended for rigorous testing whether psilocibin is effective in Parkison’s,” she told Fox News Digital.

“We also collect multimodal biological data to realize that psilocibin works. This is critical not only for the optimization of psilocybin treatment, but also to lead the development of Psychodelia of the following generations that are ongoing and can now promise to people with Parkinsonov.”

Bradley still recommends that Parkinson’s patients bring a psilocybine and Other psychedelics with “lots of caution”.

“I would not recommend my patients with Parkinson to start using psilocibin,” she explained. “We are very, very early in this research and we do not think that these drugs will not be sure of everyone with the disease.”

“I hope people will continue Proponent for research Thus, we can accelerate this procedure for identifying the right psychedelic treatment for the right patient at the right time. “

Inamadar agreed that, although the results were encouraging, the study was based on a small and limited sample.

“The study was also an open mark, which is given to the greater effects of expectations, although mood improvements and symptoms of anxiety still seen in three months, “he added.

“All in all, [the] Pretty encouraging results require further investigation, certainly trying to understand the mechanism behind the improvement of motor symptoms. “
