How to manage a deceased loved one’s Facebook account

Losing a loved one is never easy, and dealing with their digital life can add another layer of stress during a difficult time.

Facebook offers several options, depending on whether you want to preserve their account as a memorial or completely remove it. Here’s what you need to know, along with how to protect their digital legacy from abuse.

What is a memory of Facebook account?

When Facebook is aware that someone has passed away, their policy memorize account. This profile turns into a digital honor, serves as a space where friends and family can gather, share memories and review photos and posts. Memorized account:

• Displays the word “memory” next to a person’s name
• Preserves the content they have published during their lifetime
• Prevents anyone from logging into account
• Can only be managed by inherited contact (if assigned)

Not only does the memorization of the account respect the memory of the person, it also adds a layer of security by locking an account from an unauthorized approach. Anyone can ask for a Facebook account to be memorized if it believes that the user has died, but only a confirmed immediate family or inherited contact can then manage the account.

How to protect yourself from fraud on social media

Option 1: Ask for memorialization

If Facebook has not already remembered the account, you can ask for it yourself. Although anyone can apply for memorization, Facebook may require proof if you are not a close family member. Here’s how to ask for memoryization:

• Go to Memorialization Request form
• Enable the deceased Full name and date of death
• Transfer Proof of death (like an obituary, a certificate of death or memory card)
• Send the form and wait for Facebook review and process request

If the inherited contact was awarded the deceased before he passed, that person will be informed and may be able to manage the memory of profile.

If you are not sure what inherited contact is or how to set one for your account, go to Facebook > Settings > Memorialization settings and choose someone you believe in.

Option 2: Request removal

If you would rather have an account permanently deleted rather than memorized, Facebook provides a separate procedure for this, but only for immediate family members or legal representatives. Here’s a step to remove an account:

• Visit Special Request for the Account of the Died Person
• Choose an option: Remove this account
• Upload the documentationincluding a copy of the deceased death certificate and proof that you are a close family member or have a legal authority to act on their behalf

Note: Even if you know the information about a person’s application, Facebook conditions forbid the application to someone else’s account, even after death. In cases where the deceased did not use their legal name on Facebook or was a minor, Facebook could request additional documentation to check his identity.
