At its core, the Real ID law aimed to close the security shortcomings that terrorists could use. Before September 11, the standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and other IDs have greatly varied among countries, with little coordination or checking critical documents such as born and social security numbers. Several kidnappers on 11. September managed to get a legitimate state ID by fake documents, allowing them to move freely and board without discovering.
The Commission report on September 11, published in 2004, strongly recommended the establishment of national standards for identification as a measure of anti -treatment. Real ID requires the state to verify the authenticity of key documents – born books, social security numbers and address evidence. It also requires that ID -S use safety features that are more resistant to touching.

The law was controversial from the beginning. Civil freedom groups have expressed concern about privacy, data safety and the phenomenon of what some have called a “national ID.” Many countries have resisted, citing costs, logistical challenges and fears of federal exaggeration. The deadlines for compliance have been extended several times as the countries have upgraded their systems and negotiated the balance between security and individual rights.
The ID will be required not only for flights, but also to access some government facilities and nuclear places. Some advocates, like New York Chapter of the US Union for Civic FreedomThey expressed concern that the ID could eventually be required to obtain government fees and apply for a job.
“American people need to know that Real ID will be needed for the journey 7th, so these governors have been informed that they are communicating at home. We do not want anyone to delay and they would not be able to travel when they come to the airport,” said Minister of Internal Security, Kristi Noem at the cabinet meeting earlier this month.
