“The court knows that this opinion will lead to a turbulent public debate and appeal. In a healthy democracy, both are positive outcomes,” Reyes wrote. “However, we should all agree that every person who answered the invitation to serve deserves our gratitude and respect.”
“Indeed, the cruel irony is that thousands of transgender persons who sacrificed themselves – some risked their lives – to provide others with the same rights of protection that military prohibition seeks to deny them,” the judge added, noting that the defendant, on the other hand, would be burdened with public conditions and avoiding this investment, and avoiding these conditions
