Google’s new AI tech may know when your house will burn down

They become wild increasingly frequent threat around the world. Recording burns from Australia to Amazon to the United States are a pernicious environment. It was estimated that the deadly fires raging in Los Angeles caused more than $ 250 billion in January.

Current satellite images are often low resolution, rarely updated and cannot detect small fires. But what if there is a way to notice the wilderness earlier and more precisely before becoming a furious inflammation?

Enter Firesat, a new satellite project intended Discovering and monitoring the fire early. How early? The aim of the project is to discover a fire that is only 270 square meters – approximately the size of the classroom – within 20 minutes. It is also able to detect a fire of two to three hectares, about the size of two football fields.

The satellites are equipped with six scope -ups, multispectral infrared cameras designed to record images suitable for machine learning algorithms to identify the fires accurately, distinguishing them from misleading objects such as smoke remains.

Using artificial intelligenceFiresat quickly compares the place wherever it is in the world, with previous pictures of that location, taking into account factors such as nearby infrastructure and local time to determine if there is a fire.

“The distinction between actual fires and random” noise “in the environment was a challenge,” says Chris Van Arsdale, who works on climate and energy projects on Google.

The team even loaded the plane with sensors to experiment with his progress.

“The first time we used the plane, one of our team members lit a barbecue and a fire brigade in his yard so we could fly the plane and test it,” says Erica Brand, one of the FireSat project leaders. “And the sensors managed to pick it up.”

Firesat’s long -term sight takes

The first firesat satellite has already been launched. The whole constellation should be orbit by 2030. Satellite data will contribute to the global historical record of the expansion of fire so that scientists can better model and understand the behavior of the fire.

A team that stands behind Firesat

Google Research and Satellite Manufacturer Moon Space are the founders of a partner in Earth’s AllianceNonfigent FireSat Home. The financing of the first satellite of constellation comes partly from AI Collaborative: Wildfires, the initiative created by Google.org, which is convened by a leading non -profit organization, an academic institution, a government agency and a Company about a common goal of use of AI to prevent the devastating impact of fire.

As part of the AI collaboration, Google.org provided $ 13 million to support the initiation of the first satellite in Firesat constellation.
