Feeling depressed? Go to work, says Harvard psychologist


Companies that do not address employee mental health could be sabotaging, a new study study.

Adults with social anxiety and depression tend to work fewer hours, according to the Recent studies Published in Psychiatric Research & Clinical Practice.

The researchers analyzed the data of 250 adults between 18 and 60 who were diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. During a 52-week period, they tracked how many hours of each participant and recorded their anxiety and depression symptoms to see if their mental state could predict hours.

CEOs and employees are negatively affected when poor mental health persists, says Natalie DASHOLT, a clinical psychologist and instructor at the Harvard Medical School. Depression and anxiety are treated differently, but both cause people to isolate themselves, she says.

“What comes with avoidance is isolation and retaliatory and limiting our opportunity for positive experiences” “She says.

Work can provide some savings that are often overlooked.

“Work has a protective effect on our mental health,” he says. “General work is good for us from a mental health point of view. It lends structure to our lives, it makes it possible for us to interact with other people, not to mention we have an income.”
