The Coid-19 pandemic had a deep impact on US jobs, transformed where we work, how we do our job and employee priorities. According to the main economist of Glassdoor, Daniel Zhao, “there is greater flexibility in today’s workplace, whether it means distant or hybrid capabilities.”
Once unusual, remote work has become a norm. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the offices quickly adapted to allow employees to work from home, changing how to work. However, they do not believe this shift should be lasting. Executive Director and founder of VOX Financing, Adam Benowitz claims that it is time to return to personal work, saying: “I think everyone benefits from personal work and arrival and collaboration. Decision is faster. Friendships are managed; bonds that are difficult to establish when everyone is working in their home.” Benowitz, he is not alone in his belief that he will return to the model before the pandemic over the next five years. The main companies like Amazon, Google and Apple are already demanding that employees return to the office. Benowitz adds, “People generally realize that people need to be together. And we are coming back to that …. I think you will see more things like four -day weeks with some Flextime.”
But not everyone agrees with this perspective. Zhao believes that the remote work is here to stay here, noting: “It is only an important reminder that, although there may be some large companies that change, many Americans are employed in small to medium -sized enterprises, and there are a lot of experimentation from those smaller and medium -sized enterprises that could get more benefits from being able to engage the whole country.
What both sides agree on is that the future of work is likely to be hybrid. In 2021 and 2022 we experienced a “great resignation”. Going out of this, the offices began priority in the whole well -being. Both the employee and the employer focus on the balance between work and life. As Zhao notes, “Now there is certainly more awareness of the power and possibility of flexibility in the workplace. It also means flexibility about working hours and allowing workers to jump out of the office early if they need to pick up their children.”
This shift is especially useful for younger Americans. 2024. 84% of millennials and 74% gene Z expressed the desire for the possibilities of distant work. Still, some, like Benowitz, believe that work in office is more valuable: “These are the generations that need most, who are on the way up trying to learn. Learn new skills, learn who they are, make new friendships we think we are cheating on these younger generations if we do not bring them to the office and they will complain later.”
Although hybrid schedules offer numerous advantages, such as removing travel, stress reduction and providing more time at home. Companies also benefit from reducing office space and inhaling into a wider talent pool.
