Columbia University professor defends anti-Israel agitator Mahmoud Khalil

Professor of Columbia Azmat Khan University said on Sunday that campus Protest leader against Israel Mahmoud Khalil is a highly respected member of the School Community after his detention by the Immigration Agreement and Customs (ICE) in early March.

“Imagine what happens while people cover Mahmoud Khalil, this community, a man who is so precious and loved among Columbia community,” Khan told MSNBC host Ayman Mohyldin. “It was really hard for them.”

Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student and an American legal permanent resident, have detained federal immigration authorities and are faced with a possible deportation because of his alleged support Hamas in the arrest after the Trump administration move in the suppression of anti-Israeli protests.

Asked if Columbia students scared arrests or public criticisms after Khalil’s custody, Khan, who is also a New York Times journalist, said they had a “good reason” to scare.

“Some of our students who made an incredible reporting have placed themselves on some of the same websites that, for example, started after Mahmoud Khalil and many other students who were intended only for their reporting,” said the professor, listing examples of organizations that reported on student protests in Columbia.

“For example, the Canary mission left after student journalists who just reported,” Khan said. “And if you look at the pages, you will only see that about the fact that they were seen shooting inside the camp, without participating in any part of the protest. Still, they were put on some of these same places. So, seeing that it happened as fairly, I want to say, it is a fall. It happened in November.
