The convicted killer on the escape from his escape from California was now sought after because of the murder of a Mexican police commander in an elite unit known as “Gringo Hunters” after shooting with the authorities this week.
The unit was trying to arrest Cesar Hernandez, 34, who remained in the United States in a border town of Tijuan when a shooting occurred. Mexican police commander Abigail Esparza Reyes, head of units dedicated to capturing American suspects in Mexico, was shot and killed, Reuters reported.

Marina del Pilar, Governor Baja California, confirmed to Reyes’ death in a statement on Wednesday.
“I deeply regret the death of the security forces of state citizens of Abigail Esparz Reyes, while participating in the current surgery of implementing an arrest warrant,” she wrote on X.
“Family and beloved Abigail officers recognize your courage and dedication in the service of your country,” Pilar added. “Our wishes for a quick resignation are with you; Abigail’s life will be honored, and her death will not go unpunished.”
The criminal suspects have been seen long as a place to avoid US law enforcement. In 2002, the unit was transmitted “Grringo Hunters” was created to cooperate with the US authorities and arrested the fugitives that crossed the border, the report said.
Esparza Reyes led the regional team of the unit for eight years, performing more than 400 operations aimed at the arrest of American fugitives who fled to Mexico.

The US Marshal Service said his staff was in the area but not included in the shooting incident, Fox Los Angeles reported.
“We will continue to help our international partners in related investigations. Those who commit violence against law officers will be responsible. In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, USMS will not offer further comments,” the statement said.

Hernandez, 34, escaped in custody on December 2, 2024, shortly after he arrived at the Kern District Court in Delan, California states Repair department and rehabilitation.

They took him to a court appearance when he jumped out of the van and fled, the authorities said.

Hernandez was previously sentenced to 80 years of life with the possibility of conditional freedom for first degree murderThe second strike offense, CDCR said in a statement.
At the time of his escape, Hernandez was located in Kern Valley’s state prison.
