As Millions gather in churches Throughout the country for the Services of Holy Week, there is a quiet revolution: more Americans leave the benches – not because they lost their faith, but to find it under their own conditions.
The main new study shows that belief does not disappear, but changes. Decadelong research project has found that, although fewer people are attending services or identifying with religion, many are still praying, meditating and holding their faith, only under their own conditions.
National representative and study based on probability, published in “Socius: Sociological Research for Dynamic World”, has followed more than 1,300 teenagers from 2003 to 2013, following them in adulthood.
Researchers used data on surveys, interviews and records of education to understand that religious beliefs and practice developed over time.

What they discovered indicates a great shift: people leave religious institutions, not spirituality.
Weekly attending the church with 26% to 8%. The number of young people who said they did not attend services jumped from 17% to almost 58%.

One of the biggest reasons why people left organized religion? Conflict with political values, especially about questions such as same -sex marriage and traditional gender roles.
Many participants described how they move away from churches they considered to be judged or out of steps with their beliefs.
One former Catholic He said he stopped going to Mass after hearing a sermon against same -sex marriage.
“I used to like to come to church,” he said. “No more.”
Another participant said he believed in God, but “not the way the churches tell you.”
Despite deciding the church, the study shows that many older adults continue their private prayer, which is not common among younger age groups. (East)
The study also revealed that political attitudes made a difference.
Liberals were more likely to have left the conservatives religion, and support for same -sex marriages and abortions was associated with the greater fall of the attendance of the Church and religious affiliation. But the trend was not limited to one political group; Attending only declined at different prices.

Instead of describing this as secularization or becoming less religious, researchers claim that it is a shift in the way people practice faith.
Belief is moving away from formal institutions and according to more personal, often private expressions of spirituality. Many who have left the organized religion are still praying, meditating, or saying they believe in slightly larger.
