Andy Barr mulls Senate bid “independent” if Sen. Mitch McConnell runs or not

But Barr said that “ultimately this will be a family decision on our time lane.”

“It will be a decision we make regardless of the decisions that others make, including McConnell’s senator or others who have or will express an interest in running for Senate 2026, so this will be a family decision we make,” Barr said. “All I can say is that I am very, very grateful for the support of support, mostly from Kentukian, but people across the country who want to see a strong, American first lead in the US Senate.”

In a curved move to McConnell, Barr told Fox News Digital that “it was time for Kentucky to have an American senator who supports President Trump.”

McConnell at this point opposed the three Trump’s now confirmed secretary of the cabinet: the defense secretary Pete Hegsetth, Director of the National Intelligence Service Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“Now vote against almost everything,” said President of McConnell on Thursday. “He is, you know, a very bitter guy.”

Trump also said McConnell was “mentally equipped” and said he “let the Republican party go to hell.”

Barr doubled, saying, “I think it’s time for Kentucky to have an American senator who has a vision, not only to make America brilliant again, but also to make Kentucky brilliant again, and I think therefore a lot of people encouraged me to run,” said Barr. “They see me as someone who was a proven record, supporting the first plan of President Trump America, but also a very strong record of the support of the signature industry in Kentucky and the construction of a very strong record of constituent services and accessibility of Kentucky people.”

He added, “I have a vision of Kentucky, just like America, to be great. I have a vision of Kentukian to achieve my potential and bring back the American dream of Kentuckians.”

Barr said he believed that the state had “huge potential” and said that “with a strong partnership with President Trump, we can only provide extraordinary opportunities for people in Kentucky.”

Mitch McConnell leaves as a Republican leader

Asked for comment, McConnell Aide told Fox News Digital that the senator had not published on his plans in 2026.

McConnell, which will be 83 years later in February, departed from the performance of the Republican Senate leader in November 2024. McConnell was a party leader with the longest services in the history of the US Senate.

In the meantime, Barr told Fox News Digital, “I’m my own man.”

“People are trying to collect me as this kind of Republican or that kind of Republicans, but in the end I am an American first conservative to love my home country, the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” he said.

“I think what sets me apart is that no one else who looks at the race was in the trenches at work with President Trump to drain the swamp,” he continued. “I have a proven board and I think it makes me different from anyone else.”

But Barr emphasized that his decision on whether to run for the US Senate “does not depend on anyone else.”

“I’ll just stay focused on working with President Trump and working with his team to deliver my American first agent – we don’t have time to spend,” Barr told Fox News Digital. “And that’s my focus right now.”
