Although controversial, one of the least controversial films nominated for Oscar in 2025 was “Conclave“The mysterious thriller focused on Edward Berger, starring Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini and Stanley Tucci, who revives the political and religious tradition in connection with the fact that Catholic Cardinals choose a new Pope.
The conclave will reunite in reality as the Vatican revealed that Pope Francis88, the leader of the Catholic Church, passed on April 21, 2025. The day after Easter Sunday.
Although published in October 2024, “Conclave” achieved a deep chord with viewers, while Pope Francis declined to the public health in February 2025. Pope Francis fought double -sided pneumonia in the months before his death.

The film closely follows the novel of the same name written by the author Robert Harris.
“That was pretty accurate,” Dennis Doyle, professor emeritus at the University of Dayton in Ohiosaid Fox News Digital.
Doyle has taught at the University of Catholic Research for 40 years.
“There were only a few differences, as some Latin were correct, the carpet was red in the movie and her beige in real life,” Doyle said. “Sitting arrangements have been made very dramatic in the film. They are not so in real life. Not even the way the vote was not the same.”

Despite the creative freedom, Doyle felt that the movie “made very precise”.
“I was surprised at how well it was done and how they could present the characters in a way that each character was nice in a sense,” Doyle told Fox News Digital.
In preparation for the movie, Doyle has read the book twice.
“In the book, the character was transgender, but he didn’t go through the surgery,” Doyle said. “In the movie, the character was an interseks, someone who was born in both directions, but still who did not go through with surgery.”
Some Catholics headed to social media at a time when the film was released to consider it “anti -Catholic” and “dishonest”.
What is the papal conclave: within an ancient process of selecting the following pope

“I thought everything in the movie was very realistic to the very end,” Doyle said. “I thought, on a literal level, it’s not really realistic. I don’t think it would have happened, that someone who was intergex would be chosen for the pope. But symbolically, I thought the end was very interesting.”
“I saw that the end could be a turn for some Catholics,” he added.
Doyle said that, although “kind of somehow,” the movie spoke about the issue of women in the church and whether the Catholic Church could become equal to men and women.
“There are all the people in the movie serving the Cardinals of the sister,” Doyle said. “These are all nuns and in real life, in that building, there is simply a staff working in that building, and they would be people who would shut down meals and who would change the beds and such things.”

The deeper question, Doyle said, is that the movie shows men in leading roles and women as servants.
“Talk about transgender is relatively recent [in the church]”Doyle said.” I really think the conversation is more in the United States and Europe than the case in Catholic Church Globally or even necessarily in Rome. “
Vatican He published a declaration, Vatican’s Dignitas Infinit, 2024, where Pope Francis condemned gender theory. The document claimed that attempts to change the invariable sex of the individual were ultimately wrong attempts to play God.
“You could watch this whole movie and by the last two minutes this is not a problem in the movie. It doesn’t really appear. There are a few predictions of what the conclusion will be, but the movie is not about it,” Doyle said.
After the death of Pope Francis, Doyle believes that the newly released film will cause interest in the Catholic Church.

“It can make people more aware that there are a lot of policies that happens and this is an interesting topic in the movie and in the book,” he said. “I don’t think it really will have an impact on how people think about the Church, except that maybe in general, it makes the ideal of the conclave interesting.”
“Conclave” was nominated for a kill 2025 Academy Award The nominations, including the best picture and the best actor, won for the best custom scenario.
