South Korea has voted to impeach President Han Duck-soo two weeks after the parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
There was confusion in the National Assembly after the speaker announced that only 151 votes out of 300 would be needed to pass a motion of impeachment, as opposed to the 200 votes needed to impeach President Yoon.
Lawmakers from Yoon and Han’s ruling PPP party gathered at the speaker’s chair to protest and boycott the vote.
A total of 192 voted for Han to be removed.
Prime Minister Han took over after President Yoon was impeached by parliament following his failure to enact martial law on 3 December.
But opposition lawyers have criticized Han for refusing to appoint a jury to try Yoon, and the trial has been suspended.
Han has agreed to step down, which means that the country’s finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, will become the country’s leader.
