At Whitley Bay in the UK, a bright crescent moon is shining with Venus to the right.

Astronomers around the world were treated to a celestial event on Friday when Venus appeared brightly above the moon.

The country was seen with naked eyes from the UK to the US, Turkey and China.

Venus is often referred to as the Evening Star or the Morning Star because, when it is clearly visible, it appears as the brightest “star” in the sky.

Astronomical delights are expected this new year, as January 2025 will be a good month to see Venus and Saturn. Be sure to look up at the sky on January 18th, as the planets will appear 2.2° apart.

Stargazers can also see shooting stars shooting across the sky, such as Quadrantid meteor shower he continues.

The shower, which is expected to peak on Saturday, has been visible since December 26 and will continue till January 12.

Dr Robert Massey, deputy director of the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society, said viewers hoping to see fireworks at sunset would need to “keep as far away from light pollution as possible”.

“If you have time to look and the weather is nice, look because it’s the best time of the new year.”
