Trump’s administration temporarily forbids imports of cattle, horses and buffalo through ports along the southern border due to the rapid northern spread of the new world Screwworm (NWS) in Mexico.
The Secretary of the US Ministry of Agriculture (USDA) Brooke Rollins announced a suspension at X on Sunday.
“Due to the threat of the new world, I announce the suspension of a living cattle, horses and buffalo through the American entrance port of the southern border into force,” she wrote. “The last time this devastating pests attacked America, it took 30 years to recover our cattle. This cannot be repeated.”
USDA announced in a statement to the public that the first NWSI Mexico case was reported in the United States in November 2024.
The problem is when the NWs fly Maggota into the meat of living animals, they can cause serious and often deadly damage to the animal, USDA said. The species of animals that NWS Maggoti can infect include pets, livestock, wild animals, birds and in rare cases humans.
According to USDA, NWS has recently been discovered on remote farms with minimal movement of cattle in the north, about 700 miles from the US border.
The US and Mexico work together to eradicate NW before the deadly parasitic fly acts on the southern border.

In effect immediately, USDA said, an animal’s health inspection service (Aphis) and Us customs and border protection limit the imports of living animals that originate or pass through Mexico.
The suspension will continue monthly, until “a significant retention window is achieved,” USDA said.
The cattle currently held to enter the US will be processed normally, the USDA has been added, and will be examined by a veterinary official of the port and cure to ensure that they do not wear NWS.

“Secretary Berdegué and I worked closely on NWS’s response; however, it is my duty to take all the steps within my control to protect the cattle industry in the United States from this devastating pests,” Rollins said of the job she did with her Mexican colleague. “Protecting our animals and the safety of our National food supply is a matter of national security of the utmost importance. Once we see increased efforts on the supervision and eradication and the positive results of these actions, we remain dedicated to opening the border for livestock trade. This is not about the politics or punishment of Mexico, but about the food and safety of animals. “
The US and Mexico use a triple approach to achieving NWS eradication, which includes field control with education and reach that ensure prevention, treatment and early detection. Access also includes control of animals movement to limit the spread of NW -ai permanent sterile expansion of insects.

This is not the first time that NWS’s need has happened. In fact, centers for the control and prevention of illness (CDC) said NWS was eradicated in the US -in 1960s, and in the 1970s.
However, the eradication of the deadly worm cost billions of dollars and lasted decades.
