US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday asked Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino to reduce China’s influence on the Panama Canal or face immediate consequences.

Rubio met Mulino in Panama City that President Donald Trump had determined that China had “threatened the canal” and violated an agreement on its neutrality, said State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce said.

Bruce writes that the United States will “take necessary measures to protect its rights under the agreement” until the situation changes.

Rubio writes in X, “The United States of America cannot and will not continue with its effective and growing control over the Panama Canal region,” the United States.

Panama’s Conservative Pro-Business President Mulino Trump’s previous claim that Chinese troops operate the canal as “bad words” and emphasized the waterways that “is” and will always be Panama “.

The United States formed a 12 -kilometer canal more than a century ago by connecting the Pacific and the Caribbean, and in 1977, it controlled and adjacent territory until the signing of an agreement to gradually intervene in Panama, which was completed in the 5th.

The deal guarantees the canal’s permanent neutrality and lets intervene in the United States if neutrality is violated.

While invading Chinese influence, US critics in Panama focus on two ports on both sides of the canal operated by the Hachison Hachison Holdings, an united CK Hutchison Holding, under the long concession. They were renewed without the bid process in 2021 for 25 years.

Mulino acknowledged the ports on the ports on Sunday and mentioned that his government had started auditing port exemption, about 5 percent of the market shares, which could be rejected in imagination in Panama.

It is not clear, however, that canceling Chinese concessions would be enough to satisfy Trump, who called the canal fees a “full strap” and claimed to return the canal canal.

According to the Associated Press, about 20 people traveled to Panama’s capital on Sunday, carried the national flag and shouted ‘outside Panama’, while the US secretary’s meeting was underway, the Associated Press said. Some burned a banner with Trump and Rubio images.

In another gesture towards the United States, Mulino said that Panama’s participation in China’s belt and road infrastructure would not be renewed, without its expiry date. Panama joined Belt and Road in 2017 when it changed diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

In recent years, Chinese state-controlled companies have built a huge convention center near the mouth of the canal and are building a new bridge and cruise ship port on the waterway, secured agreements through bid processes. The project did not want to build a large new embassy on the land near the Beijing Canal until the US objected to the project.

In his meeting with Mulino and Panamania’s Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Achar, Rubio praised Panama’s efforts to end illegal immigration and “Under the desire to ensure a level of play for a fair competition by US agencies,” he has undergone the climate of advanced investment.

Number of migrants illegally crossing the Darien jungle between Panama and Colombia – a major international immigration route in the United States in recent years – has been submerged since Trump took over. According to the Panama National Immigration Authority, the number was reduced by 94 percent last month compared to the same month.
