US avoids government shutdown after bill passes Congress

The Democratic-controlled US Congress has voted to pass a budget agreement to avert what would be the first US government shutdown since 2019, just hours after the House of Representatives passed the same bill.

The budget agreement was passed shortly after midnight.

It does not include President-elect Donald Trump’s request that lawmakers increase the amount the federal government can borrow, showing the limits of his ability to command lawmakers from his own party.

The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. A statement from Biden’s spokesman released earlier Friday night said he approved the deal.

Lawmakers earlier this week successfully negotiated funding for federal agencies but it fizzled after Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk asked Republicans to veto it.

The bill approved by Congress is the third bill lawmakers have voted on this week, after members of Congress voted down two previous bills.
