Several protected military sites in Britain are limiting access to electric vehicles due to anxiety that Chinese technology that can be used for spying in vehicles.
According to the Defense Ministry officials, Raf Wighton personnel – an air base in Cambridgeire, which operates intelligence – which is asked to avoid parking EVs near the base of vehicles.
The site is among several who have limited access to vehicles, though the department has refused to provide a full list because of the protection.
Lord Vernon Cocker of Defense Minister last month Told Parliament There was no centrally compulsory policy in the movement of Chinese -produced vehicles ”but some sites have specific rules.
“We are aware that some of the separate defense agencies may have strict requirements related to electric vehicles, but we do not provide specific details because of the protection,” he said in a written answer.
“Our principles and procedures not only produced in China, considering the potential threat from all types of vehicles and we have issued appropriate internal directions for all drivers and passengers,” he added.
Virtually all EVs have Chinese parts due to China’s leadership in battery technology and censors. There is concern that a battery management unit, powered diagnostics or sensors used to help driving can be used to collect all sensitive data or enable remote surveillance.
The Defense Ministry has refused to outline which sites were damaged.
“Protecting national protection is the basis of everything we do,” it says. “We have strict security methods to ensure that all sensitive information is protected.”
These restrictions are combined with extensive Western concerns related to Chinese technology, which is widespread in critical infrastructure.
Intelligence agencies have warned that some Chinese-exposed systems can be used to collect telemetry, location data and even audio recording.
Prior to the UK, the telecommunications company has promised to remove the equipment from Huawei from Huawei and exclude its equipment from the next generation 5G Internet network across the country.
Anxiety over modern cars used for espionage has been given for a while. In 2021, China banned Tesla cars – which are equipped with multiple cameras – can be used to collect intelligence information from entering the military complex with anxiety.
The Financial Times reported earlier this year that the Defense Ministry’s Protection Manual was recently updated with guidelines that military personnel must be conversing about sensitive issues in vehicles or avoiding smart technology, a policy that is applicable to all vehicles regardless of the type or source.
A UK official added: “We continue to work across the government about the possible impact of connected vehicles.”
