Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., on Tuesday tried to defend his social media post comparing the mayor of New York Zohrana Mamdani rhetoric about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Tuberville shared a post last week that placed a picture of Mamdani, who appeared to be hosting a Ramadan Iftar at City Hall, next to a photo of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. An account called “End Wokeness” posted the pictures along with a message that read, “Less than 25 years apart.”
“The enemy is inside the door,” Tuberville said on X in response to the image.
Asked to explain his post on social media platform X, Tuberville said: “I’m just going along with his rhetoric.”

“He’s made a lot of statements about his stance on Islam and radical Islam, all the things that go along with what he preaches every day. And I’m just repeating what he’s saying,” the senator told DC News Now’s Reshad Hudson.
“We don’t need division in this country. We all need to adhere to the Constitution, understand that we have moral values. And if we all adhere to those –– I don’t care if you’re Muslim, Catholic or Baptist, it makes no difference,” he continued.
He added: “We need to make the country better; we don’t need to divide it. That’s what he’s doing in New York.”

When asked about whether Muslim Americans in Alabama his post could be offensive, Tuberville said he has “some great Muslim friends” and talked to “two Iranians in Alabama last week about the war. Obviously, they’re Muslim.”
“If you teach and preach Sharia law, if you worship the Koran, it teaches Americans death. That doesn’t work in my favor, okay?” he said, even though the Qur’an does not mention the US or Americans.
The Alabama lawmaker and former college football coach reiterated that he doesn’t care about anyone’s religious background.
“Hey, come and be a part of our country [and] don’t try to divide people, don’t try to push your culture — we already have a culture — [then] I’m for you,” he added.
Tuberville made several more Islam-focused social media posts on Tuesday.

“Radical Islam is the enemy of every freedom-loving American. The liberal media covers radical Islamists, but the Quran is quite CLEAR in its instructions to KILL all non-Muslims,” he said in one post.
“To everyone I offended by calling radical Islamic jihadists the enemy: If the shoe fits, wear it,” he said in another post.

The senator’s initial “enemy is inside the door” post, which was pinned to the top of his X account on Wednesday morning, prompted a severe rebuke of the democratsincluding Mamdani, who is Muslim.
“Let there be as much anger from politicians in Washington when children are hungry as when I break bread with New Yorkers,” Mamdani told Xu in response to the senator’s post.
