Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tsziu could face Joey Spencer in April in Australia. This would be a confidence boost for the 29-year-old TSZIU (24-2, 17 KOS), who has lost his last two fights, going 0-2 in 2024.
Spencer would be a return fight for TSZia to prepare him for a possible fight against Keith Thurman. That’s if Thurman wins his March 12 bout against Brock Jarvis in Sydney. TSZIU was supposed to fight former WBC and WBA welterweight champion Thurman last year on March 30, but pulled out of the dugout with a biceps injury.
Before last year’s disasters, TSziu would have been seen as a huge favorite to deal with Spencer (19-1, 11 hp), but not anymore. It has to be seen as a 50-50 fight, as TSZiu has shown that he is incapable of simply adjusting during a fight.
And Raphael reports That TSziu vs. Spencer is possible in the first quarter of 2025.
This is a must-win for TSZIU, because if he can’t beat Joey Spencer, 24, he needs to seriously consider retirement because it’s not a top 154-pounder. Jesus Ramos destroyed him in seven rounds on March 25, 2023.
Since then, Spencer has beaten three unspecified no-name fighters to build up somewhat. He still hasn’t proven his world-class ability, but he seems to be good enough to be selected as TSZIU’s comeback fight in April.
Murtazaliev disaster
TSZIU knocked out IBF Junior Champion Bakhram Murtazaliev in three rounds on October 19 of last year in an embarrassing four-legged loss at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
Murtazaliev revealed after the fight that he fought with an injured right hand and was forced to use his left. It proved to be more than enough, as he repeatedly dropped TSZIU with that kick until the referee finally waved it off in the third round.
Bakhram’s primary weapon is his powerful right arm. You can only imagine what the struggle would have been if he was doing that for him. Tsziu may not have made it from the first round.
TSZIU lost to 6’5″ Sebastian Fondator by a 12-round Split Decision on March 30 of last year. Going into that fight, there was talk of TSZIU potentially fighting Terence Crawford in what would be big money, but FONDORA has ruined everything.
