Donald Trump has said that a meeting is being planned between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US president-elect did not give a date for the meeting.
“They want to meet and we’re setting it up,” he said in a statement from Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
Russian news agency Tass quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that the US had not yet requested a meeting.
Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine as soon as he takes office on January 20 and has expressed doubts about US military and financial aid to Kyiv.
“President Putin wants to meet,” he said on Thursday.
“He even said that publicly and we have to end the war. It’s a bloody mess.”
Trump has appointed Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired US Army general, to be his special envoy to Ukraine and Russia for his second term in office.
Kellogg presented his ideas on how the US could end the war in a research paper published by the America First Policy Institutethe pro-Trump think thank you, in April last year.
He said Ukraine must get more US support if it agrees to participate in peace talks with Moscow.
The paper also said that if Moscow refuses to participate then the US should continue its aid to Ukraine.
After Trump’s election in November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he believed that, with Trump as president, the war would “end up” better than it would have otherwise.
He also said the two had “encouraging exchanges” on the phone, although he did not say whether Trump had asked anything about negotiations with Russia.
