US President Donald Trump has said he will withdraw the US from the historic Paris climate accord, dealing a blow to global efforts to slow global warming after the hottest year on record.
The move was announced after Trump was sworn in to succeed Joe Biden as US president on Monday.
“President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement,” the White House said in an email listing the new administration’s priorities less than half an hour after the new president took office.
America’s withdrawal from the 2015 accord, which was signed by nearly 200 countries, means the world’s biggest historical polluter will again renege on its pledge to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
Rachel Cletus, policy director of the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the US withdrawal was “a fraud” and a “blatant disregard for scientific reality”.
In his opening speech, Trump said that he would like to make the most of the oil and gas reserves of the United States.
The United States was the only country to withdraw from the Paris Agreement in 2017 under the first Trump administration. But it rejoined in 2021 under Biden. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also threatened to withdraw from the deal, but did not follow through.
