Top Canada leaders to meet with Trump aids to discuss tariffs


Two senior Canadian ministers headed to Trump’s president-elect home in Florida on Thursday to discuss border security and trade as the incoming president’s inauguration day approaches.

New Treasury Secretary Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affairs Secretary Mélanie Joly will be in Palm Beach, Fla., on Thursday for talks this week, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, LeBlanc’s spokesman, told The Associated Press.

Comeau said LeBlanc, along with Joly, will meet with Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming “border czar,” after Christmas to discuss Canada’s plan to secure the border as part of the effort avoid all-inclusive tariffs.

A spokesman said LeBlanc and Joly “look forward to building on the discussions that took place when the Prime Minister met President Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month, as well as the positive conversation the ministers had with Mr. Tom Homan earlier this month .”

With discussion border securityCanadian leaders hope to focus talks on the fentanyl trade and the “negative effects” of Trump’s tariffs on goods.

“Ministers intend to focus on Canada’s efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration and the measures outlined in Canada’s border plan, as well as the negative effects that the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods would have on both Canada and the United States,” Comeau added in a statement.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian imports when he takes office in January if the country does not reduce the flow of migrants and fentanyl in the USA

Trump made derisive remarks about Canadians Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media, calling the ally “Governor of Canada Justin Trudeau.”

The statement on Christmas Day came after Trump suggested to Trudeau that if tariffs on Canada were to kill its economy, perhaps Canada should become 51st US state.

Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canadian imports, meanwhile, have unsettled Canada, which is highly integrated with the US economy.

About 60% of US crude oil imports come from Canada, as well as 85% of US electricity imports.

Almost 3.6 billion Canadian dollars – or 2.7 billion US dollars – of goods and services cross the border every day. Canada is the main export destination for 36 US states.
