Tips for starting a successful side hustle in 2025 according to expert

Side hustlers put a considerable amount of extra money in their wallets in 2024. They earned $891 per month on average, according to a June 2024 Bankrate survey of 2,332 US adults. Some bring in as much as $1,000 to $2,000 per month.

If you are one of the many people trying to add another income stream in 2025There are a few moves you can make early to set yourself up for success, says Angelique Rewers, CEO of the small business consulting firm. BoldHaus.

Here’s what she recommends.

Organize the tools for your hustle

First, “make sure that you they are organized“, says Rewers.

“You need a dedicated bank account,” she says. “You need a dedicated credit card. You have to be sure that your tax accountant know what you are doing.” You can build excel spreadsheets to keep records of your customers – everything needed to keep your external earning activities in order.

If your gig takes off and you haven’t created the relevant dedicated tools for it, “you lose control of the side hustle,” he says.

Make sure you “follow your time”

Second, be aware of the commitment you are making. “Make sure you’re not just tracking your expenses, you’re tracking your time,” says Rewers.

It is easy to underestimate the number of hours you spend on your way and work overtime without being paid for it. Maybe you said to a customer a project should take five hours, then bill them for those five hours even if it really took 10, for example.

But “that’s how a side hustle can go from being something that’s really great to do to having a lot of resentment and not worth your time,” says Rewers. So, be realistic about how long it will take and charge accordingly.

“Pick up the phone, text people”

Finally, be sure to let the people in your life know about your new gig.

For those in your personal life, like your family and friends, “pick up the phone, text people, send voice memos, let them know what you’re doing,” says Rewers. They can help you find clients or even hire yourself.

Beyond that, create posts or profiles apps and platforms such as “Nextdoor, Facebook groups, Upwork, FiverrReddit,” she says, to tap into your external network and people you don’t know. She adds that “unless it’s going to compete with your full-time job, you can definitely talk on LinkedIn too.”
