Tank Davis’ blinding speed, but against whom?

Gervonta Davis showed off his blinding hand speed today, working out with his trainer, Barry Hunter, on the gloves in preparation for the title defense of his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The glove master

Davis looks great with the gloves on, but it’s overkill because his opponent, the super featherweight Roach, lacks power and is outmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank worked as a dog and fought someone with actual talent. That’s when you get interested in watching him hit the glove, but not when it’s just another pick like everyone else during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year pro career.

Tank Davis’ last seven opponents

– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz

It’s a mediocre bunch, and none of them are relevant lightweights, not one. So it’s great that Tank Davis excels at hitting the gloves, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. Those types of fights should be free because they are matches meant to be mismatched.

Tank’s form resembled that of Floyd Mayweather Jr., his former promoter, in his workouts with gloves. But the two couldn’t be further from each other in fighting style. Luckily, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is a lot more fun to watch than Floyd Jr. was.

Still, Tank is VERY Mayweather-like with his cherry picking in addition to his glove training. Floyd has been the best at picking them off and moving away from dangerous predators throughout his career. Now, Tank follows his safety first plan.

Where is the challenge?

Fans want to see Tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting opposition that has a chance to beat him. Davis or his management generally always picked fighters where he was the heavy favorite.

They want to see a tank fight with one of these sharks:

– Shakur Stevenson
– Keyshavn Davis
– Andy Cruz
– Edwin De Los Santos
– Vasiliy Lomachenko
– William Zepeda
– Bahram Murtazaliyev
– Sebastian Fundora
– Sergey Bohachuk
– Israel Madrimov
