A Swiss citizen who was arrested in Iran and accused of being a spy has died in prison, according to Iranian media.
The man was being held by another inmate at the eastern Semnan prison when he “suicided himself” on Thursday, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.
The Mizan News Agency reports that the prison authorities took immediate action to save the Swiss citizen’s life, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Mizan did not say much about this person.
“This morning, a Swiss citizen committed suicide in the Semnan prison,” a statement on the Mizan website, written by Mohammad Sadegh Akbari, head of the Semnan judiciary.
The statement added that he had been “arrested by the Iranian military for espionage” and that the case was “being monitored”.
In recent years, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have arrested dual nationals and foreigners, mostly on espionage and security-related charges.
Switzerland plays an important role between Washington and Tehran because it represents America’s interests in Iran and shares information between the two countries.
