At least 120 people were reported killed in an accident on Monday in the Dar-Salam area of the Sudanese city of Omdurman, across the Nile from the capital Khartoum, according to a group of volunteers.
The Ombada Emergency Response Room said that the number of people who died was temporary, meaning that the number of people affected by the accident will increase.
Rescuers say medical aid is running low as medical workers struggle to treat more people injured in the bombings.
Sudan’s civil war, now 21 months old, has killed thousands, displaced more than 12 million people and pushed the country to the brink of famine, which the UN describes as one of the world’s worst disasters.
It began last year when the military leadership and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) clashed over the country’s future.
The Ombada Emergency Response Room did not identify the perpetrator of the attack in Omdurman.
Volunteers and emergency response groups have faced difficulties reaching some areas due to the ongoing fighting.
Most of Omdurman is under military control while the RSF is headquartered in and part of the greater Khartoum region.
In the past few weeks, the army has increased its weapons in Omdurman in an attempt to regain control. The army claimed to have seized three areas and confiscated weapons left behind by the army.
RSF fighters are pushing back on positions in two areas. Residents on both sides of the Nile reported that the river was being flooded, with bombs and missiles hitting homes and civilians.
“The area has been devastated by the prolonged fighting that has seen people firing bullets and buildings that have exploded,” said the Ombada Emergency Response Room.
The two groups are accused of targeting civilians, including health workers, and indiscriminate shelling of residential areas.
The latest fighting has forced emergency rooms, which serve the community amid the ongoing conflict, to close several hospitals affecting the provision of medical care to thousands of people.
