European stocks were lower on Friday as regional markets reopened after a shutdown for the Christmas holiday.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 The index was 0.1% lower shortly after the opening bell, with most sectors and major bourses in negative territory.

Investors are monitoring economic data outside of China, where official figures show industrial profits in the world’s second-largest economy. contracted for the fourth consecutive month in November.

The data press came a day after the World Bank raised its growth forecasts for China in 2024 and 2025, but warned that the country’s economy remained under pressure, given muted business confidence and continued uncertainty in China’s struggling property sector.

The markets were in mixed territory overnight in Asia, as traders react to the latest Chinese data press, as well as recent inflation numbers out of Japan. In an update on FridayOfficial figures show core inflation in the city of Tokyo was 3% in November, from 2.6% in October.

Back in Europe, Spain and Norway will publish their November retail sales numbers on Friday.
