Reality stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, known for their time on MTV’s “The Hills,” have lost their home in fires in Californiabut not everyone feels compassion.
The couple sat down with “Good Morning America,” recalling the shock of his loss.
“Spencer said, ‘Grab whatever you want to keep,’ and I said, ‘How are you going to choose?’ My brain basically stopped working because I was overwhelmed with so many things you can’t replace so I grabbed my kids’ teddy bears,” Montag said through tears.

Pratt added: “The worst was… our nursery. It’s so magical. We tell a story every night. It’s such a routine. There’s so much love in there. Our son’s bed started burning in the shape of a heart. The fire just started like a heart, I said, ‘This is out of body, crazy’.”

Their home was located in pacific palisades, where devastating fires broke out on January 7, destroying houses and business buildings. Both the Palisades Fire and the nearby Eaton Fire remain active, according to Cal Fire.
The couple says their home and possessions were uninsured, and they noticed they were one of many Southern Californians who were kicked out of their policy.
As Montag explained to the outlet, “We were ‘house poor,’ as they call it. We have a house and everything else is a grind, a grind, so we definitely count every dollar we make.”

Fans supported the stars, including sending Montag’s debut album, released in 2010, topped the iTunes charts, where it reached number one for both song and album this week.
“The support from the fans has been such a light in such darkness for us and it’s life-changing,” Montag said.
However, not everyone was so kind in their comments on the couple’s interview.
“Buy another house. Stop crying,” one person wrote on “Good Morning America’s” Instagram page.

“Wearing a Heidi shirt,” wrote another, calling it a “shameless promotion during the worst tragedy imaginable, never going to change sorry no sorry.”
Many echoed this sentiment, saying: “This is so sad, but there are so many people who have lost everything, not just celebrities. Come on people, interview anyone but celebrities!!”
But others still sympathized with the stars, won over by their honesty after their reality heyday TV “villains” on “The Hills”.

“They are so different now. Humble and relatable!” said one person.
“Being Spencer and Heidi’s biggest fan I wasn’t on the 2025 BINGO card but here we are,” added another.
On social networks, parents of two boys, Gunnar, 7, and Ryker, 2, shared pictures and a video of what was left of their home.

“It’s a place that you love, that you live in, that’s a refuge from the world and to disappear is a really hard concept to deal with every day,” Montag said as she broke down in tears again.
“I feel like a ghost. Now I don’t have any photos from before the iPhone,” Pratt said. “I don’t have any of the silly little things on your shelves. They’re all gone. Not one, nothing.”
