News that Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, is living in a retirement home and experiencing “very fast” decline has caused a social media firestorm this week across the political spectrum.
Among these voices including billionaire Elon Muska key adviser and supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
“Maybe we should have some basic cognitive test for elected officials? This is getting crazy…” Musk said, referring to the Granger news.

Former Education Department press secretary Angela Morabito said Granger’s staff was possibly “complicit.”
“WOW: Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), who hasn’t voted on the bill in six months, is living in a nursing home in secret. Records show she has 25 employees. If any of them knew — and it would be hard not to know — they are accomplices,” Morabito divided it into X.
Former Texas state representative Jonathan Stickland also commented on Granger, expressing that he did aware of her memory problems.
“No one should be mad at Rep. Kay Granger. Six years ago (as an elected official who regularly worked with/around her) it was obvious that she had serious memory problems. She had no idea what was going on for quite some time. However, her friends, family and staff failed to protect her and left her to fend for herself, praying for peace for Rep. Granger.
Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee said the news about Granger labeled “a compelling case for term limits.”
He was the first to report Granger’s absence Dallas Express on Friday, who quoted a constituent in her district who said he was living in a memory care facility in Texas.
Axios political reporter Hans Nichols admitted he missed the Granger story due to limited journalistic resources on CNN on Monday.
“[We] … they have limited resources and limited time to cover all these stories. We were supposed to get Kay Granger’s story though. I mean, I’ll own some of it, as someone who spends some time on the Hill. You know, collectively we are all to blame. Like, you know, individually, it’s hard to parse the blame,” Nichols said.

The story of Granger comes after a year that was defined by President Biden’s cognitive and mental problems that ultimately led to him being ousted from the Democratic nomination. There have been reports of a coordinated effort to conceal his impairment from the public.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierrewho has repeatedly brushed off questions about Biden’s fitness to hold office, told CNN in June 2022 that she herself had a hard time keeping up with the president.

Executive Director of Women for America First, Kylie Jane Kremer, wrote on X, “Not just leadership, but all colleagues who were aware. As outraged as we are about Biden, we should be equally outraged about Kay Granger.”
Members of Biden’s staff noticed his decreasing endurance and increasing confusion in the first few months of his tenure, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.
The magazine based its report on interviews with nearly 50 people, including current and former White House staff who communicated directly with the president, as well as with the representatives.
California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna said on X that Congress has a “sclerotic gerontocracy.”
“Kay Granger’s long absence reveals a problem with a Congress that rewards seniority and relationships over merit and ideas. We have a sclerotic gerontocracy. We need term limits. We need to get big money out of politics so a new generation of Americans can run and serve,” he posted. is Khann.

Progressive independent journalist Ken Klippenstein posted a reference to a video of Granger speaking on the House floor, earlier in 2024.
“The claim that no one knew about Congresswoman Kay Granger’s dementia is ridiculous. Here she is speaking before Congress in March, stuttering and stumbling over every sentence while literally relying on a written script. This is painful to watch,” Klippenstein shared.

Granger, who is 81 years old, did not seek re-election and is retiring after this congress term next month. She has been absent from the Capitol for the most part in recent months, and last voted on July 24. This year, she was not present at more than 54% of the votes. She also resigned from her position on the House Appropriations Committee, which drafts bills that fund the federal government.
