Heavy smog and poor air quality have caused travel chaos in the Indian city of Delhi.
Visibility in several areas was reported to be zero early on Friday, disrupting flights, trains and road transport.
More than 150 flights have been delayed and many trains are running late due to bad weather, reports said.
These are again and again a problem in northern India every winter, where low temperatures between December and January block pollutants near the ground – which affect visibility – making travel difficult and dangerous for air.
Delhi’s air quality index was above 400 in several areas, according to the government Safar website. This is more than 25 times the safe limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Authorities in the capital have also introduced pollution control measures, which include bans on construction and demolition, and school classes going online.
Video and photos from Delhi and nearby cities showed a blanket of fog covering roads and fields and sheltered buildings.
The Delhi airport has issued an advisory warning passengers of possible disruptions due to the reduced capacity.
“Though boarding and departure will continue at Delhi airport, non-CAT III compliant flights may be affected,” he said. advice read it. CAT III is a system that allows aircraft to land in poor visibility.
According to flight tracking website flightradar24, departures at Delhi airport were delayed by more than 30 minutes and arrivals by about 20 minutes.
Several passengers took to social media to complain about the chaos at the airport.
“There is no display of the entrance gates and it seems that no one knows what they are,” a user wrote on X (formerly twitter).
Currently 26 city-bound trains are delayed due to fog, Indian Railways said.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted light rain over the weekend, which is expected to change the weather.
