Sinkhole in New Jersey keeps I-80 closed after a section collapses into an abandoned mine


Roads were repairing a short section of Interstate 80 u northern New Jersey on Friday where the sinkhole forced the eastbound lanes to close, but it is not yet known when they will reopen.

The freeway’s guardrail was still hanging in the air over the 40-foot-wide (12-meter) gaping hole, which opened when abandoned mine collapsed under the right shoulder of the freeway Thursday morning, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The flooding forced drivers to make a short detour near Wharton, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of New York City.

Crews stabilized the area and began excavation. They will work around the clock to repair the road, the Highway Administration announced on Friday.

The time when the eastbound lanes will open depends on how extensive the repairs will be and the upcoming weather conditions, the ministry said. Drivers should still expect delays and use alternate routes.
