Sean Duffy’s transport secretary said on Friday Fox News’ Steve Doocy Newark Liberty International Airport Closed runway could reopen in less than two weeks – a move that hopes to make constant delays caused by closing.
Duffy said that the closed Pista Newarka would reopen “very quickly” and that the runway could be ready “maybe in the next week”.
After asking him what is being done to mitigate delays and dismissal faced Airports across the countryDuffy gave withdrawing what he thinks are the main questions that cause these delays.
“So listen – what’s going on is that we have the weather – it happens at this time of year, number one. Number two, we have a limited amount of 3000 short controllers at the national level. And then, specifically in Newark, we have our runner that is off. It will open very quickly,” he told Doocy. “The port administration overthrew him at a speed.”

Duffy continued, noting that, although it could be frustrating for air passengers to delay or cancel their flights, stating that the main priority of the Ministry of Transport (DOT) remains the security of passengers.
“Whether it’s time, we may have a shortage of air traffic controllers. You know we had problems with telecommunications in Philadelphia or Newark, from Philly Tracon. So, these factors come to play. And the key is your safety,” Duffy said. “Many questions that come – is it safe to fly? And of course it is. We have so much release, but we have to fix the system.”
Then the transport secretary is drawn into detail that he predicts that departures from Newark will improve after the end of the runway and other improvements.
“So 28 departures per hour. It used to be 50-54,” he claimed. “So when the runway opens, we will arrive at 34.”

According to Duffy, another question that is bothering the Newark airport is the fact that new air traffic controllers from other airspace cannot be easily brought to alleviate the disadvantage; First, they have to be dressed in Newark’s airspace.
Duffy said there are currently 16 air traffic controllers on Newark and usually takes six months to a year to certify in a new airspace.

After Doocy asked him about the second issue that the air traffic controller industry was facing a large number of controllers who withdraw-Duffy set his plan to encourage retirement controller to stay at work.

“Air traffic controllers can withdraw after 25 years of service. I offered them 20% bonus in advance to stay after their acceptable retirement date,” he said. “This is a government job where you are very well paid. To give them that bonus, I think that’s important.”

Duffy said his goal was to keep experienced controllers while expanding the pipeline to get more young people at the Federal Air Force Academy (FAA) and worked in the industry.
