Sophie Hediger, a Swiss snowboarder who represented the country at Winter Olympic Games 2022died after an avalanche at a ski resort, officials said Tuesday. She was 26 years old.
The incident happened on Monday at Arosa resort in Switzerlandit is stated in the press release of the country’s ski association.

“We are stunned and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we extend our deepest condolences,” Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser said in a statement.
“WITH tragic death Sophie Hediger, a dark shadow has been cast on Christmas days for a Swiss skiing family. We are extremely sad. We will keep Sophie in honorable memory,” he added.

Hediger was a participant in the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022. She competed in snowboard cross and mixed team cross. She failed to qualify for the quarterfinals in the singles event, and her team lost in the mixed event in the semifinals.
Hediger returned in 2023 when she won the gold medal at the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, New York. She was one of three Swiss competitors who won gold medals.

She then finished twice on the World Cup podium, including second place in St. Mortiza in January.
