Authorities have released the identity of the inmate charged with assault and murder Veteran Ohio prison officer on Christmas.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) confirmed that Officer Andrew Lansing lost his life on Christmas morning after an “inmate assault” at prison in Chillicothee.
The incident happened around 7:15 a.m., and the department has not released additional information about what led up to the attack.
On Thursday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the inmate as 27-year-old Rashawn Cannon, who was booked on felony assault and weapons under disability charges stemming from a September 2023 incident, according to the Ohio Department of Corrections and Education website. .

Cannon was transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, according to officials.
Annette Chambers-Smith, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Education, released a statement about the attack, calling it a “tough loss.”
“It is with great sadness that I confirm the tragic death of prison officer Andrew Lansing following an assault on an inmate that occurred this morning at Ross Correctional Institution,” Chambers-Smith said in a statement.
“Losing an employee is difficult, but to lose a family member on Christmas at the hands of someone in our custody is an unfathomable tragedy. Chambers-Smith said Officer Lansing was a longtime, valued employee at the center and that his “untimely death, on Christmas Day, is heartbreaking for his family, the entire Ross Correctional Institution family and our agency as a whole.”

“Officer Lansing was loved by his colleagues and known to be a great support to his fellow RCI staff. Please keep Officer Lansing’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers at this devastating and tragic time,” the statement continued.
Tail. Mark Johnson, R-Ohio, also released a statement, offering his condolences and calling the Lansing officer “one of the best jail officers.”

“While many of us were celebrating the Christmas holidays, tragedy struck Ross Prison. I am saddened and upset to say that one of the prison’s best officers lost his life today in a struggle with an inmate,” the statement said.
“The Ohio Highway Patrol is conducting a homicide investigation. Please remember the officer’s family in your prayers as they struggle with his loss this Christmas.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered all flags to be lowered in honor of Officer Lansing until sunset on the day of his funeral.
Chambers-Smith added that Ross Correctional Institution is currently operating under a curfew, and an investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol is ongoing.
