A North Carolina police officer was killed Monday morning when a gunman opened fire in Greensboro Food Lion grocery store.

Greensboro Policeman Michael Horan, 44, responded to a call about a man with a gun at the store around 11 a.m., according to the department. During the confrontation, Horan was fatally shot.

The circumstances are currently being determined, according to the police.

The suspect was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan was killed after responding to a call about a man with a gun at a Food Lion.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation but did not immediately respond to requests for information about the suspects.

The department described Horan as beloved husband and father with an “outstanding reputation” within the department and community.

“We ask that you keep his family, friends and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers,” a spokesman said Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Food Lion offered its condolences in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Food Lion is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our store located in 4709 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro,” – the company wrote in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the officer’s family and friends.”

Food Lion emphasized that it is cooperating with the authorities and that the store will remain closed.

“We are providing funds to support our associates at this difficult time,” the statement said.

In a statement posted on social media, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper noted that he is in contact with local and state law enforcement regarding the shooting.

“We have deployed significant state law enforcement personnel to assist in the response,” Cooper said.

According to officials, Horan has served with the Greensboro Police Department since 2018.
