Multitasking is not the answer to your feelings of ‘overwhelm’

A arrest claimed came down to my inbox. According to a new survey, a quarter of the British is sending email from Lu, because they are so stressed for the time. “Relaxing is a topic of past”, crying in the press release, which says that one -third of the respondents continue to work on their phone in the evening – “time watching their TV programs”. Ah

A feature of modern life, including “overwhelmed”, implies that harassed workers are forced to do multitasks to keep the ballooning demands at the top. But when 5 percent of respondents admit to the weekly online shop during a business meeting, I was wondering what happened on Saturday – and their boss. Have we reached the peak delay in which meetings are now a real -life performance adjunction – walking the dog and cleaning the house, which the respondents of these surveys did the time to do work calls?

Multitasking supporters want us to remind us that the Eureca moment of Archimedes was during the bath. But as he was wet, he was letting his mind wander. He was not sitting there with his camera, trying not to splash when others were shaking.

I recently asked a painter a quote for some decoration. We got chat while he took a look at different walls. Since the epidemic he told me how many times he arrived at the house that he was sitting on the sofa of the big men, watching the game in the middle of the day, when he was vaguely tapped on their keyboards how many times he arrived at home. It puts a new color on “over work”.

Nowadays, if you do just one thing at a time, you think you are a plader. However 20 years of evidence tells us that the task-siching makes most people foolish. A survey of the University of UTA 216 found that talking on the phone while driving on the phone is as dangerous as drunk: it slows down the reactions. The same team also recently said that the car “Infotina” systems are more dangerous than the phone in confusion.

Our brains are primarily wired to do a job at once. Even walking and talking starts to become complicated when we get older. This does not mean that life has to be monotonous. According to the Center for Attention Studies in Kings College Londze, many workers enjoy tagling in work and it can be positive. In fact, “interliving” – later switching to the topics that returned to them – all the anger of the school as a proven strategy to reconsider the test.

However, the growing level of anxiety means it is important to turn the conversation into a focus. Difficulty in concentrating is highly related to some anxiety disorder recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. And we consider our ability to multitask excessively. In fact, those who are at risk of being awake should do this: because studies show that they have more emotional and less executive control.

I fear that I am in that next team, but I have recently received two general hacks. I tried to check the email only twice a day, but this is not by my personality or my career. Instead, I am back to the list of things. The existence of the list relieves my brain from pain – until the tasks are quite detailed. And the use of pens and paper seems to have been more deeply impressed in my subconscious. It is supported by new research that discovers discovers that we create a more broad brain connection when we write. These connections are important for memory formation – and it makes it important to continue with the children’s handwriting.

What am I trying to do in Cal Newport in his book Slow productivityBy calling a “pool system”. Basically, you brutally focus on your top three projects and dodge as much as possible, meetings and messages about meetings related to next projects. Only when you have finished one of your top three will you pull the next one in that slot.

We all have different versions of this system – and I think it can only be called “focus”. However, following my own version, reflects me how many times the difference is lost in acts that actually produce earnings, things move forward and mean it. And the process that works. By which I mean pre-meeting, compliance training module, always “all the answers” email chain and more. The first type of work is much more satisfactory. The second is that office staff reports about dog walking and toilets – and my new decorator friend says that he is happy to get less in his physical job.

I suspect, if these processes are done in the background of music, text, scrolling or occasionally in the background of the football score, it is even more enjoyable. The problem is that people switches in multiple channels – demonstrating heavy media multitaska by Stanford researchers – demonstrates worse memories and lower executive control even after concentrating on a single job.

It turns out that there are some “superschers” who are capable of conducting multiple tasks without losing their skills. In brain scans, this group shows less brain activity when additional work is added. Unfortunately, about 2 percent of us are in that section. So the spans of attention are not infinite and it will be kind to us and our employers to admit that they behave carefully.
