Facebook owner Meta is ending its third-party fact-checking program and will instead rely on its users to flag misinformation.
The social media platform said on Tuesday it would “allow more speech by lifting restrictions on some topics that are part of mainstream speech and focusing our enforcement on illegal and high-intensity violations” and “take a more personalized approach to political content”.
Starting in the US, Meta will move to a so-called “community note” model, employed by Elon Musk’s X, that allows users to add context to controversial or confusing posts. The meta itself will not write community notes.
