Men guilty of felling much-loved British ‘Sycamore Gap’ tree

Two men were found guilty on Friday for cutting the British ‘Sycamore Gap’ tree two years ago, a very beloved landmark fell whose dramatic silhouette presented by UA Hollywood movie in what the prosecutors described as a “Moronian mission”.

Sycamore, estimated at almost 200 years, stood at the center of a dramatic sinking in the landscape, with the historic Hadrian wall in Northern Englandwhich makes it a popular place for photographers, hikers, and even suggestions for marriage.

Such was his glory, which he portrayed in the movie “Robin Hood: Prince Thieves” from 1991, and her decline in September 2023 caused widespread sadness and anger.

Prosecutor Richard Wright told the jurors at Newcastle Crown Court last month that Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, were responsible for “Undencine Vandalism”, professionally and intentionally reduced him with a chainsaw.

Colling also caused damage to the part of Hadrian wall, built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago and now a UNESCO World Heritage.

Graham and Carruthers, who traveled to a place in Northuberland National Park from their homes in the Carlisle area, about 25 miles away, denied any involvement. But they were convicted of two points of criminal damage.

Men will be convicted on July 15.

“For over a century, Sycamore Gap has been an iconic natural landmark in northeast of England, bringing an immense joy to those who visit the area,” said Prosecutor Crown Gale Gilchrist.

“In just under three minutes, Graham and Carruthers have completed their historic legacy in a deliberate and foolish act of destruction.”

During the jury trial shows a video of their “Moron mission”, shot on Graham’s mobile phone, which showed a grain footage of what seemed like an iconic tree.

The prosecution said the men took a wedge tree as a trophy and messages that they subsequently sent to each other showed that they “enjoyed” the world reaction to the incident. Not an explanation for their actions was given.

National trust, a charitable organization for the preservation of heritage that takes care of the place, said that last August at the foot of the tree were signs of life, giving the hope that he could live.
