Some people might want to consider being a little more… diplomatic.
That’s the overall assessment of commenters on a viral Reddit thread after a man described the experience going on a trip to nature with his brother while on vacation in Arizona — then shared his candid answer to a question his brother asked him after they finished their hike.
“I’m the type of guy who, when he’s not enjoying something, I’ll tell you he’s not,” Reddit user “Ness_Lucas” wrote at the beginning of his social media post a few days ago.
By Sunday, the post had garnered more than 6,000 reactions.
He added: “But if I commit to something, I will see it through to the end without complaining.”

He said the issue “came to a head” when he was “on vacation with his older brother in Arizona, who wanted to do a lot of nature hiking.”
A man on Reddit wrote, “Nature walks they are fine. I don’t mind them, but I don’t like walking on big hills.”
“Walking uphill … really exhausts me and leaves me sweating.”
He added: “Walking downhill is the easiest thing ever. It’s like being nature’s traveling princess. You just put your foot forward and let gravity do all the work.”

He continued, “On the other hand, walking uphill is very exhausting and leaves me sweaty.”
He continued: “I don’t see any point in complaining about anything when I’m doing it, so as I walked up the hill, despite not liking it too much, I kept [a] basic conversation with my brother.”

“When I was walking uphill, even though I didn’t really like it, I held on [a] basic conversation with my brother,” the man wrote on social media as others discussed his dilemma. (iStock)
However, as the pair began to descend, the man said to his brother “he asked me if I had fun – and I said no.”
He added, “Not my brother’s fault. I just didn’t find the activity fun. Not even bad, just satisfying.”
“I don’t like it when people ask me for my opinion and get angry when I give an honest answer.”
Later, when the brother was driving a Reddit poster to the airport on his flight home, the man said his brother told him, “If I ask you if you’re having fun, don’t say ‘no’.”

However, “I don’t like it when people ask my opinion and get upset when I give them an honest answer,” he said.

“If I’m not having fun, I’ll just say I’m not having fun.”
Respondents on the Reddit site known as “Am I an A-hole” had quite a time with the post – giving their overall assessment that the man was indeed an “a-hole” due to the way he responded a member of his family.
“People want to hear that you enjoy their company.”
One commenter wrote in the top-rated answer: “‘It was a fun day hanging out with you, but man, this climb is steep.’ [or] ‘I’m looking forward to the descent!’ That’s the kind of polite response people are looking for.”

The same person added: “You admit that you enjoy your brother’s company, which was what he was asking for, but you can also admit that the hike is tough/tough, etc. It doesn’t matter how crappy the activity is – people want to hear that you’re enjoying their company.”

Another person said harshly: “You are elevated on your self-anointed pedestal and expect everyone to treat you like a child princess. Your brother probably regrets ever going hiking with you. Sometimes in life you have to walk uphill to get where you’re going.”

Another commenter kicked the poster off Reddit but shared this suggestion: “Not everyone likes to hike. It’s a personal choice. But a better option would be to talk to your brother and compromise on doing something you BOTH enjoy.”
