The man from Maryland was arrested after disrupting Christmas Eve services at two local churches, including pouring whiskey into holy water.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Mary announced that Thomas Campbell Bolling Von Goetz, 56, of Avenue, was arrested and charged with several misdemeanors after causing a scene during religious services and endangering members of the public.
Shortly after 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, deputies said Von Goetz entered Catholic Church of the Holy Angels in Avenija Mass, he approached the altar and dropped the bow in the aisle, thus disturbing the peace of those present.
Deputies said a witness followed Von Goetz as he exited the church to make sure he was leaving and saw him then attack another person by throwing tangerines at them.

Later that night, deputies said Von Goetz struck again, this time during a midnight mass at St. Francis Xavier in Leonardtown.
Deputies said Von Goetz disrupted the service by pouring whiskey into the holy water and threatened to harm the parishioners.

As churchgoers escorted him out of the building, deputies said he unsuccessfully tried to hit several people with a whiskey bottle.
Parishioners were able to detain Von Goetz until deputies arrived.

Von Goetz was then transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
On Dec. 26, 2024, deputies said Von Goetz was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, defacing religious property, religious crime against a group, disturbing religious worship, threatening mass violence and disturbing the peace.

He is currently in the St. Louis County Jail and Rehabilitation Center. Mary’s, pending an appearance before a circuit court commissioner.
