Lara Trump withdraws name from consideration for Florida Senate seat

Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, has withdrawn her name from the Senate seat.

He stepped down this month as chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), sparking speculation that he could replace Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, whom Trump nominated for secretary of state.

But in X’s letter, he said he withdrew “after much thought, reflection, and encouragement from many”.

He also said he is asking Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for a chance to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of Rubio’s six-year term, which ends in 2026.

In her letter on X Saturday, Lara Trump said: “I couldn’t be more honored to chair the RNC in the biggest election of our lifetime and I am humbled by the incredible support I have been shown by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida.”

He also said he has a big announcement to share in January, without giving away details.

Lara Trump was named RNC chair in March, strengthening her mother-in-law’s influence in the party as she pushes for leadership.

Along with her husband, Trump’s son, Eric, and her older brother, Don Jr., she became one of the Republican presidential nominees in the run-up to the election.
