US President Joe Biden has said he thinks he could have defeated Donald Trump and won again in November.
Speaking to USA Today in special interviewBiden added that he did not know if he would have been in power for another four years.
“Right now, it’s good,” the 82-year-old said. “But who knows what I’ll be like when I’m 86?”
In an interview with Susan Page, Mr Biden also said he was still considering pardoning Donald Trump’s enemies, including former Republican Liz Cheney and former health chief Dr Anthony Fauci.
In an interview published Wednesday, Mr. Biden said he “spoke frankly with Mr. Trump” about his possible pardons in their Oval Office meeting shortly before the November election.
“I tried to make it clear that there was no reason, and it was against his interest to go back and try to take back more,” Biden said, adding that Trump did not back down, but “just listened”.
Biden said his final choice will depend on who Trump chooses for his cabinet.
At the same meeting, Mr. Biden said that Mr. Trump was “authoritative” about his finances.
“He [Trump] I thought I was leaving on a good note,” the Democrat said.
The interview with USA Today is the only interview Biden has given so far in print.
Media access to Biden is strictly controlled by the White House — and the president has not held a press conference since dropping out of the race on July 21.
In an interview, the outgoing president defended himself the full and unconditional pardon he granted to his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing two charges – tax evasion and illegal gun buying – despite repeated claims he would not.
Biden, who first came to Capitol Hill in 1972 as a US senator, has criticized his party for his reluctance to drop out of the presidential race because of concerns about his age and his views.
Speaking to USA Today, Biden said that “based on the polls” he believed he would have won, but acknowledged that his age could affect his position.
“When Trump was running for re-election, I thought I had a very good chance of beating him. But I wasn’t looking to be president at 85, 86,” Biden said. “But I don’t know. Who the hell knows?”
Following the loss of Vice President Kamala Harris to Trump, senior members of the Democratic Party, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said Democrats. It would have been better in the election if Biden had come out sooner.
