Jermall Charlo is back in the gym, training for a comeback to prepare for his return to the ring in 2025.
Former undisputed junior middleweight champion Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) has been resting for the last 15 months after losing to IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168 lb champion Canelo Alvarez in a wide 12-round unanimous decision in undisputed 30.09.2023.
Fans on social media are joking that the 34-year-old Charlo blew the estimated $20 million salary he received to fight Canelo. Charlo didn’t ruin his total earnings; he made the right decision to continue his career. Jermell can make a lot of money if he fights on one of Turki Al-Sheikh’s cards in Riyadh.
The 154-pound division has gotten a lot better in the last year since Charlo has held four belts at that weight class, and it’s questionable whether he can beat any of the top fighters now. He’s been out for too long, and there are more talented guys at the top now than when Jermell held the belts.
Fans would be interested in Al-Shiekh offering Yermel a fight against one of these talents:
– Israel Madrimov
– Sergey Bohachuk
– Virgil Ortiz Jr.
– Charles Conwell
– Bahram Murtazaliyev
– Sebastian Fundora
– Terence Crawford
– Xander Zaias
– Ioeniz Tellaz
– Tim Tsziu
If you’re Turkish, the easiest fight would be Jermell vs. IBF champion Murtazaliev. Crawford won’t agree to fight Charles unless he’s offered big money, perhaps more than what he got for his fight against Madrimov on August 3rd.
Most of those fighters would beat the version of Jermelo who lost to Canelo and fought Brian Castan and Tony Harrison. Again, the 154lb division has changed and gotten a lot better. Charlo will turn 35 on May 19, which is not young for any weight class.
If Charlo comes back, he needs to stay active instead of fighting once and then disappearing for a year. He fought on a yearly basis since 2020. He didn’t fight in 2024, he rested after getting a big payday against Canelo.
